I was cleaning my 05 XL1200C sat. afternoon and found alot of of the chrome peeling and pitting on the back wheel. Has anyone else had this problem? Does warranty cover it? I bought it last may. Its been garage kept and only cleaned with S100 and water and then dried.
Contact the dealer - should be warantied - but be careful, some may want to blame the care so be nice when tlking to them till there is no other option - post updates so we can follow along
I talked with my local shop and they said they will order a new wheel and call me when it comes in. I think I will buy that chrome sprocket cover now and have it installed when the new wheel goes back on. I'll keep ya updated if anything changes.
moparharleydude,
It should be covered under warranty. Other people have been experiencing the same problem on the same wheel and Harley is replacing them under warranty. It has nothing to do with mistreatment or improper cleaning in case they try to blame it on you. If it did, then both wheels should be in similar condition. I have to admit, this is the first company that I have seen warranty chrome.
I've heard of this and it should be covered under warranty. I knew of a friends bike that was experiencing serious blow by and the back wheel was getting misted with oil. The dealer said that the oil was corroding the rear wheel in that instance. Don't know about that one but thought I'd mention it.
That sounds like a snow job to me. Oil is a preservative to prevent corosion. Even used oil does not have that many corosives in it to cause pitting, it may discolor the surface but not pitting. I deal with a lot of aluminum, magnesium, and titanium surfaces on aircraft, so metalurgy is kind of a side line but it is serious business. I have never seen corosion caused by oil, synthetic or petroleum based.
Yup, I have to agree with inthechateau. Sure sounds like a snow job to me![:'(] I use a thin film of oil on my chrome pipes over the winter since I live in a highly corrosive atmosphere (VERY near the ocean). Oil PROTECTS chrome, it doesn't corrode it.
