Well, don't know if this will help, but I've got a listing of a number of pipes on my sportster web page that I took a look at before making the decision to go with Thunderheaders. For a 2 into 1 system they are very good and seem to be prefered by a lot of high performance shops. Are they loud... yeap, but very different in sound to what you would get with 2 into 2 systems.

Yep, Thunderheaders are a great (amongst the best) 2-1 performance pipe. Supertrapp and RB Racing make really good ones also. Nice and loud, but not the "loudest"... Depends, I guess, on what combo of sound, looks and performance you're after. And all sound is not created equal. You can drill out your baffles and be loud but sometimes end up sounding like a lawnmower - lol. Good 2-1 and 2-2 tuned systems will give you loud sound, but with a deep, throaty rumble to go with it... Good luck!
In general only... longer pipes with a bigger inside diameter will give you a deeper sound than shorter skinny pipes. Baffles can complicate this, but for illustration, think of a pipe organ. The longer, bigger pipes stretch the soundwave to give it a deeper note than shorter pipes. As for volume, drag pipes will be the loudest w/ no baffles, but a system with a lot of internal baffeling (stock muffs) will give you the quietest volume.
They are a million different loud pipe's but for example straght pipe's are loud but they do not have the best sound to them imo and you will lose a lot of power. A 2-1 is loud but sounds completly different than a straight pipe. And in general short pipe's will be louder than long pipe's and short pipe's may also shoot fire ***** if you are not careful.
Loudest would be drag pipes (straight-through, short, no muffs), although a drop-in low end torque would be the sacrifice for the "most" sound...
What he said ! One of the guys we ride with has very long and loud drap pipes on his 99 Sporty....extremely loud..no baffles. Your neighbors will LOVE YOU
i have short 1 3/4 drags on my sporty and let me tell you the neibords DONT love me and after 2 hrs. of riding i tend to get a headach myself i think im going to get some v&h short shots and hope they quiet it down some
jaredhd, the best thing is to hang around and listen to some sportys that have the sound you think you like and ask what kind of pipes they are. good luck!!
