Default Electrical question. Possibly easy to answer

I need to be able to turn all the lights off. Anyone have experience with modifying the electrics in this manner?

The engine shuts down, which is an undesired result.

It is illegal to operate a motorcycle without lights, especially the headlight.

For what reason would you want to ride without lights?

Regardless of *why* you want to do it, I'd get ahold of a service manual. The wiring diagram will tell ya which circuits (pretty sure running/brake and headlight are separate) you need to put a switch on. Sorry for the vague advice.

my sporty ignition has three positions.

1- off
2 - ignition on only
3 - everything on.

it comes in handy and i use number 2 during the day to save the battery, my batt is WAY WAY WAY past its service life (more than 10 years old, which i assume is longer than they are supposed to last)

maybe you can retrofit an old ignition switch and make the wiring so it acts the same as the older bikes.

EDIT by the way, when i am in the ignition only mode, i have no running lights, but the brake light and turn signals still work if i activate them. which means they are on seperate circuits than the running lights. hope that helps.
