Anyone know why HD doesn't have the base 883 on their website for 09 ? There are only 5 sportster models available in the U.S. but 8 sportster models in the U.K.
Yeah, Harley has made what is called a marketing decision. A few months ago, the local dealer had so many bikes in inventory that there was literally no parking place for customers. After a production cutback, an xl is now a rare item. The same dealer has only a few Sportsters (all models) in stock.
Harley has a good track record in the marketing game. To me, dropping the xl is a major move, akin to backing up and drawing another line in the sand. To many folks, it is insignificant. Time will tell.
well europe has the roadster which us doesnt now also the 1200r is on the europe site and the 883 standard sells better there. they just werent moving here a lot of the dealers were only selling the 883 lows and customs so being the price wasnt that large of a gap they dropped it. same for the roadster alot of people love them but apparently wasnt selling enough to suit themselves? im not sure but the entire xl family will never be dropped. im sure in a few years there will be some more additions. and well be up to 6 soon once the 1200r comes here officially.
Given that HD does seem to know the supply/demand game pretty well, I'm guessing that they are focusing on the lines where margins are higher and there is less perceived competition. The Sporty is an entry-level Harley, which means you have to first convince the prospect to make a brand decision (HD vs. Honda vs. Triumph, etc.) and then make a model decision. Entry level buyers have much less expensive options than the Sporty, which may be impacting sales in this economy. They also may not have the established brand loyalty that drives folks like us to spend big bucks on a Harley vs. a Honda.
My sense is that larger, brand new Harley sales are driven by those who have likely owned a Harley previously and have that HD brand loyalty. These buyers are less likely to consider other brands, even in down markets.
