Just bought a 2004 XL1200C and it's burning oil faster than I am used to (in a car). So not knowing I come here to ask. I just recently topped off and after about 500 miles I've lost 1/2 quart.
I called one HD dealer and got 1 quart every 10,000 miles.
Called the HS dealer I bought this bike from and of course they said 1 quart every 1,000 miles.
So for this bike, what would be "normal" oil burn ?

The 1 quart per 1,000 miles answer is a pretty standard response from HD, not that most people consider it acceptable.
First you need to determine what is causing the oil burn, if in fact it's burning it and not leaking it.
With bad rings you will usually see smoke from the exhaust during hard acceleration or high speed cruise.
Another common problem on late model year 04's and 05's, is bad valve seals. HD has redesigned the seals to fix the problem but they are not going to acknowledge it or cover it under warranty. To check for a valve seal problem, on the jiffy stand and in neutral, rev the motor up high and snap the throttle closed. If you see smoke from the pipes as the motor spins down to idle you have a valve seal problem.
Interesting, I thought I would call HD themselves and see what their official line was.
Well never got it because they want all sorts of personal information before they would talk to me. Sure turned me off "read p*ssed" that they required all that before talking to me.

That is 1 of 10 reasons why I avoid going to the HD dealer.

In this case it was HD headquarters
Instead of marketing (filling up their db of contact information) I sort of thought they would just want to help answer questions
