Default 5 minute ride

Yes, that's about all I can get out of my 06 sporty now for some reason.

The bike starts fine, idles fine after starting, then goes down the road with no hesitation, burp/cough etc. Give it around 4-5 minutes of riding, then come to a stop to idle, and the motor idles down, then quits. Re-starting involves repeated cranking, twisting throttle, then you have to either pull the choke out completely, or continually rev the motor or else it will quit again.

Drained tank, added new fuel, added dry gas, added carb cleaner additive to the fuel, cleaned out carb with carb cleaner, re-attached, and tried again, same result. Lines to carb, vaccum etc are not torn, or ripped, bike has 3800k on it so the rubber/plastic isn't even degrading or dried out yet.

I'm at a total loss now, looking for answers now. Any ideas, or things I missed? Don't say get a EFI bike, I've already though of it but that just get's rid of my problem, I'd love to find out why my bike is doing this.

It sounds like you have tried all the right things. Have you checked the petcock? Maybe something has went wrong with it. Sounds like your getting fuel but then the petcock is shut off therefore starving the bike. Maybe something is broken in there causing a small piece to move around and then dislodge when the bike dies. I am not a mechanic by any means but it is an idea. Bryan

+1 on the petcock.... Check the vacuum line going to the back of the petcock if there is a leak it won't open the valve, could also be a bad diaphram in the petcock also. I would take it apart and inspect the diaphram for holes. Has it been running alright until recently? It's possible you may need a cable adjustment or adjust the idle stop adjustment screw on the carb.

Check the idle screw. maybe replace the vacume line on the back of the petcock, cheap and easy to do. Possible the line is weak in a spot and it slowly collapses keeping the fuel from getting to the carb. Another thing could be the vent line is kinked or plugged or a bad fuel cap.

Take the air cleaner cover off and ride it around the block until it dies, when it dies, look in your carb and hit the throttle, that will tell you if you're getting gas or not. If you're getting gas, take the gas cap off and see if it'll start again, if it does ride it around for a minute with the cap off to see if it dies, this will tell you if the cap is vented or not. If it still dies, buy a manual and perform the elec. checks on the coil. Hope this helps.

What codes if any does it post when you run the diagnostics through the speedo?
Maybe the crank position sensor going bad, your stated problems seem to indicate that could be the likely culprit.

Try your crank position sensor. My bike did the same thing under warranty. Took it to the dealer and had to tell him how to fix the problem. Go figure!

And here I thought I had exhausted all viable avenues..

Ok, I'm going to check the petcock when I get out of work.

As for the CPS, I didden't think the 06 had any sensors on it? Least nothing that elaborate?

Sick1200, I did leave the cover off on a previous test and the accelerator pump squirts fuel. The vent cap is another option I can look at.

As for the sensor, that seems the most likely culprit, my gut tells me that the sensor (if it has one) could be the culprit. I only say this cause my last car had the same issue, only after it got warmed up.

Thanks for more insight, I'll give it another look tonight.

Uhhhhhh, what he ^^^^^^ said. Check for the codes on your speedo, and let us know if anything show'd up there first before messing with the petcock.

Check and see if you have crap in your fuel bowl, being sucked up and blocking the main jet.
