Default Utah 1088

Well, for better or worse, my Sporty and I are entered into the 2009 Utah 1088.

It will be interesting if nothing else.

I'll post more on the modifications required and how I do, but the preliminary list:

1) SEAT - DayLong, period. Now, I just need it built.
2) Suspension - the 413's are great on the rear, but I need to replace the front end
3) Fuel - the 120 mile / tank ain't gonna cut it, I'm looking to extend that to 400 miles per tank. 600 would kick ***.
4) Lighting - I swear the stock Sportster headlamp is made by Lucas, there's a pair of 30W HID lamps on their way from the good folks at Aerostich.

Good luck on your rally effort!

headlamp is made by Lucas
bwahahaha Have you played with British cars and/or bikes? I've got a '60 Brit car, with Lucas electric system. Lucas was the inventor of the three-position switch - dim/flicker/off. Lucas was the inventor of intermittent wipers. If Lucas made guns, wars wouldn't start. Lucas once tried to make a vacuum cleaner... it was the only thing they ever made that didn't suck. I could go on...

I just sold my 1973 Triumph Spitfire. Before that, I had a '77 Spit.

If Lucas wasn't pissin' me off, it was Whitworth. *grin*

Good luck....Have you been considering an external tank set up on a luggage rack? For the front suspension, maybe Progressive fork springs? Or do you want a whole new front end, like a wide glide? And if you do the wide glide would new bars also possibly be in order, or do you think the ones you have will work? I'm very interested in your setup. I'll google "Utah 1088" and find out more about it, but I'm not interested in in for myself. I'm only good for MAYBE 700-800 miles in a day, and I could possibly swing 1k but I certainly wouldn't want to repeat it the next day!

Yup. It will be a challenge, but I do believe that Sporties can be very comfortable machines if set up properly.

Hell, I rode several 1000+ days on my Ironhead, this new rubber mounted fuel injected critter should be much easier on me!

There is a fuel cell in the works that will mount on a rack with the CG about 1" in front of the rear axle. I hope I can move the CG of that a little forward, but if I can't, it will be fine. The bitch is plumbing it in. I could be a ***** and buy a Road Glide and tap into the cross over line behind the neck of the frame but then I'd have a sissy bike and that wouldn't be any fun.

I'm considering a whole new front end, but at $1500+ I think I'll try the $70 Progressive springs first. The rear of the bike is already sitting an inch higher than "normal" so I'll lift the front an equal amount if I replace the forks entirely.

I don't *think* I need new bars, I rather like the wide bars on my 1200R. But, I do need to put some risers in there to lift them about 1.5" Once the Day Long saddle comes in, I'll take final measurements and make the risers.

The 1088 is a 24 hour ride and I have NO idea how far I'll have to ride. The top mileage guys are up around 1800 miles. I won't be that guy. The Sporty is a right nice little bike, but it just ain't got the motor for that kind of riding.

Yeah, I checked up on it and I don't see how those guys do that! They're averaging 75 mph, which INCLUDES GAS, NATURE and MEAL STOPS! On my trip from Dodge City, KS to DFW, I only averaged 54.5 mph...including all stops. Then again, I was trying to conserve fuel and wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere. I normally ride at 70-75, so I'm averaging about 60 dividing miles traveled by length of time to get there. I realized on my 3,166 mile journey into 7 states that 500 miles is about right for me daily, assuming I start early enough. I also found out a backrest helps IMMENSELY! I had my ALICE pack strapped on the pillion.

I wanna see pics of your setup as your doing the mods. On trips, I tend to have a "Jed Clampett" theme going! LOL!!!

It's intimidating, but if it were easy it wouldn't be any fun

I think I posted a picture a while back of the bike loaded up.

I had WAY too much crap on the bike...

Well, I leave on Friday for a leisurely ride to Utah for the rally. The fun starts on the 27th.

Here's my tracking website for any of you that wish to follow along.

*site removed*

The bike looks quite different from the pictures posted above.

Here's a quick list of what I've done

- DayLong saddle
- Two sets of driving lights for 12,000 lumens of forward lighting
- TourTank mounted for a total of 11.5 gallons of fuel
- 2 gallon insulated water jug (hose run to my jacket for on the fly drinking)
- HardStreet saddlebags (water resistant and locking)
- Hyperlites tied into the brake / turn signals
- Clock / thermometer mounted on windshield
- Garmin 2610 GPS

I'm sure I left off something, I'll post pics and a report when I return.
