Default 5000 mile service?

I was at the dealer the other day about the trade-up offer and he said I needed to have the 5000 mile dealer service done first.

I have about 7000 on the bike, and I changed the oil and filter myself at 5000. I didn't see a need to bring it in at 5000 miles and pay another $300. What else to they do at 5000 miles? Is it something I can do? I hate that to keep the warranty they force you into spending a fortune on simple maintenance.

I am going to keep the bike, happy to maintain it myself, but if there's some real value to having them do a 5k, I'll bring it in.

Should be able to do it all yourself. I don't have the manual with me here at work so I really couldn't tell you everything. If someone doesn't step in here and give it to you before I get home I'll do it then. You really should not need any special tools, just the basic ones. Might get some torques or some allens.

It's all laid out right in the service manual on how to do it. They make sure everything still in adjustment....Like adjusting the primary chain, drive belt, lube the cables, check various tolerances/torque specs on several parts, etc, etc. If you're a decent wrench with a manual, you can do it.

There is actually a list of what's supposed to be done at each service interval in the back of your Owners Manual.

I haven't heard anything about the trade-up offer being good only after the 5000 mile service. Both dealers I frequent have been trying to get me to trade mine up and I don't even have 5000 miles on mine. I think they are trying to get you to pay for a service you don't need.

As was posted, the list is in the the owners manual. But at the 5,000 mile mark, the only other thing I would REALLY be concerned about is changing the transmission fluid.

I think since he hadn't done a 5,000 mile service, they wanted that done to the bike before taking it in on trade. Not that he had to wait until it had 5,000 miles on it before taking it.
