I'm doing my 1000 mile service tomorrow(oil and trans) and was wondering if I had to keep the bike strait up when taking off the clutch inspection cover to prevent the fluid from spilling out. I'm assuming they just want you to have the bike off the stand to see the appropriate level of the fluid. I think it's fairly simple though, take the cover off, drop the drain plug, fill 1 quart, replace quad ring, anything I'm missing? Also are you guys replacing your air filters with the 1000 mile service? I don't see why I would need to, thanks.
If you take off the derby cover, some fluid will probably get out even if you keep it centered. So be ready to catch it. I probably wouldn't take the DC off unless I suspected clutch issues. Drain it and refill it thru the chain inspection hole. Inspect the chain slack and adjust as required. I wouldn't replace the AF unless I thought it needed it. Take a look and clean it up as necessary.
You don't need to screw around with the derby cover and gasket to change out the primary fluid on the Sportsters, Dynas, Softails, or any other model...
Just drain the primary, open the inspection change cover, pour in new fluid, and go ride.... While you have the inspection cover open might as well go ahead and check the primary chain tension... If it happens to need adjustment it's about a 5 minute job.
Why make things more difficult than they should be....
I'm think I'm going to stay with the HD formula+ just because I think its a fairly new trans oil they are useing unless somebody suggests otherhwise. So are we saying we don't fill thru the p chain cover, it would make it a hell of alot easier.
