Default real brakes for '59 XLH

My 20 yr old son was gifted a pretty stock 59XLH. I felt it prudent to get disc brakes before he rode it, which we did. The problem is how to deal with the manual advance. The old buckhorn bars had the cable in the bars, he wanted shorter bars. Anyone have any ideas?

Good lord man you got a stock 59 and you are messing with it. You should have sold the 59 and you could have gotten enough to purchase a modern bike for your son and someone else would have gotten a good restoreable 59.
Everyone would have been a winner.
Now no one wins.
Sorry guy but good restoreable bikes are hard to come by.

Hopefully you kept the old parts and can put them back on.I agree with jag if you don't like it as is sell it and get a newer one.Maybe even a new one if you found the right buyer.

What for the person who wishes to actually ride the bike in a real world setting. These bikes do not stop well. You could not run this bike where I live no matter what unless you did it a 3 am. We all would like a stock old bike but the facts dictate that people now follow closer and stop sooner. You can make a front end stand and put the old forks and wheel in the bedroom, just to look at it. With real brakes you can actually stop without getting killed. I have been riding since 1965 and in Fort Lauderdale, there is no way my brand new (then) 1965 Sportster would ever make it here much less a 1959. Make it look stock as you can and ride it.
