Well, I got my mikuni 42 carb on today. Go to start the bike and it just cranks. Sprayed a bit of starting fluid in the carb and nothing. So I go to check the spark, nothing from either of them. Even used a brand new plug, nothing. So I got to troubleshoot the coil. The spark plug wire terminals tested in the range. The two posts above them read a little high. The range is 2.5 - 3.1 ohms, mine read around 3.4. No corrosion or anything, but its also a screaming eagle coil, instead of the regular Sportster coil. I just replaced the coil and ignition module in December or so, but havent riden it since due to just now getting a carb on. I looked in my manual for ignition module troubleshooting, but it didnt say much. Can anyone help please?!
The odds are low that the ECM or coils just happend to quit while you were working on the carb.
Go back over anything you touched while installing the carb, you may have pulled an electrical connector apart while working, or squashed a wire during installation, also did you check all the fuses?
Sounds like you haven't started her since replaceing the coil and ignition, am I right? If that's the case, I would go back to that and check everything that was touched from then till now.
I've only been messing with the carb. Nothing else. I replaced the ignition module and coil before the carb, and it ran after i replaced them. I did remove the VOES from its bracket with plans on zip-tieing it up, but i dont think that has any thing to do with my spark issue.
Couple of things:
What year is the bike?
If you still have the stock ignition module it's easy enough to put it back in and try it.
Try putting the original coil back in.
If you had the fuel tank off could you have unplugged a connector under there?
Check the connection(s) on the Crank Position Sensor.
Figured it out! The pink wire was barely holding onto the coil connector. Got that wrapped back up and it runs...sorda. Besides needing to jump it since its been sitting so long, the carb is running pretty rich, i think so at least. It smells like exhaust X 100, if you know what I mean. It only runs with the choke pulled out, even after warming up for 5-10 minutes. Dies as soon as i push it in. Would that have anything to do with the EGR? I dont have it hooked up, nor do i have an air filter on it so its just pushing air through the bolt holes. Has anyone capped those bolt heads off?
