Does anyone ever wish they had a tach (for those of us without one)? What's the best/easiest/inexpensive way of getting one installed? Would it be worth it or do we just play it by ear?
I just recently installed one on my 06 Sportster. I used the tach kit from Harley(67182-04). It was super easy. I got the tach kit from Zanotti and it came with a little instruction sheet. All I had to do was unhook the Speedometer and mount. Then just replace with the included mount and plug up the new wiring that came. The hardest part was getting the new wire to plug back up. Very tight for my big hands.
You're good as long as you don't have an 04-06 Custom. If you do, all the easy ways to do this are not available due to the speedo housing being part of the riser top.
You can change your riser but then you are adding more expense to it. To make matters more complicated, those risers hide wiring harnesses and connectors in there. Go with a different riser and you lose you hiding spot for that stuff.
For now anyway.......Give them a bit of time and surely they will come up with a happy-glad, nice, clean add-on kit to put a tach on a Custom.
They already have come up with all of the parts needed to add a tach to an 04 or newer custom. The cost is a little over $300 for the tach, the mount and the tach housing. I don't know how easy or diffficult it is to install, and I'm not sure if I want to spend $300 to find out.
