Driving around 50 to 80 the speedo is bouncing 10 to 20 mph.
Was running rough, and then would stall at a stop..restart..stall..would continue until I gave it some gas then would run real ruff.
This AM I tightened the battery cables..and the bike seems to be running better, but still have the bouncing speedo needle..
I did a search on the subject but nobody had a clear cut solution..
speed sensor?...other ideas?
I can not pinpoint the exact problem, but the speedo is electronic and it sounds like you have a short somewhere. check the plug on the back of the speedo, then check the fuse box for corrosion. follow the wires coming from the speedo and look for anything abnormal. not much help but that is all I have. maybe someone else will chime in with more.
Also check your connections at the coil, (90* connections & spark plug wires). You might need to pull the 90*'ers and give them a good squeeze before re-connecting them.
I would also check the termination from you battery hot down to the starter. It's not unusual for the cable to be kinked at the starter and give out....
I had the same problem years ago and it was a ground cable cable that was assembled wrong at the factory, it looked perfect on the outside but when you grabbed it and pull on it the end that bolts to the frame came apart the cable wasn't soldered into the lug and the only thing hold the cable together was the shrink wrap.
Personally I would be looking at the VSS.That controls the speedo through serial data. The signal goes to the ICM and then to the TSS/TSSM.Then it goes to the speedo itself. It could be a corrupted signal in the wiring as well.Have you added anything lately? It could be RFI or MII if that is the case.If you rerouted your plug wires or other wires it can cause that to happen.
Mine has had a similar issue since new. Every once in awhile, the speedo needle drops to 0, then jumps right back up to the correct speed. It seems like I have to ride a few miles before this starts happening, and I told the dealer about it, but they never saw it happen on their test rides. Anybody got any ideas about this one?
