Default jetting confusion

i have a 06 1200c i put VnH straightshots on also SE AC was running 42slo and 170 main seemed ok but lacked a little power, switched slow jet to a 45 and seem to get a carb backfire and run on now occasionally. any suggestions much appreciated.

Switch the main jet to a 175 or 180 and shim the needle with 2 #4 washers. Drill out your mixture screw plug and lightly seat the screw. Then back the screw out 2-1/2 turns and see how it runs. Also, while you have the bottom off of the carb, adjust the float height per the manual. Engine run on is a sign of a lean condition, what do your plugs look like?

already drilled and changed spring also used all shims that came with kit i think it was 3, the plugs are a little tan, they were less tan with the 42 slo in the carb the mix is at 3 turns

Put your stock spring back in and see if that helps. I have yet to hear or experience anything good about slide modifications. Your run on could be the result of not enough spring pressure to allow the slide to work properly. If it is dropping too slow, that will cause run on.

My son put his stock spring back in his and I think he adjusted his mixture screw some too. He never did have the run on just an occasional carb fart.

I found that a 45 slow jet and a 180 main is the best combo for my 02 883. I have Samson shorties and a hypercharger installed. I drilled the slide and replaced the spring with the Dynojet one. I had to play with the mixture screw a bit. It still spits in the carb until it is warmed up then it runs great.
