The title says it all. I've been through the HD Accessories Catalog and can't find anything that lists the diameter of the current model XL engine guard p/n 49060-04. Most of the peg mounting hardware listed in the catalog is for 1-1/4" bars but notes it doesn't fit the XL guard. I'm assuming the XL guard must be 1" or 1-1/8".
Anyone have a recommendation for a clamp assembly for peg mounting on the guard? I've been looking at THESE but they're kinda $$$ for what they are.
Also, because of the rounded design of the XL guard, has anyone seen a peg mount that allows for the adjustment of the peg's horizontal plane? Like, ya don't want the peg to point downhill, if ya know what I mean.
I use 1"1/4 clamps on my crash bar, they work fine. The only way you will have problems with the pegs not being on a even plane is if you want to do something weird. In that case you might have to make some sort of adapter.
Thanks FastHoss. I have since found out from the dealer that the guard is 1-1/4". Apparently HD's catalog says the peg clamps don't fit because of the rounded nature of the engine guard, but I think I can make them work.
The problem with making sure that the pegs come out horizontal is demonstrated in the pic below. Because of the oval shape of the bar, there is really only a single point on the guard at which the peg clamps can be mounted and have the pegs be horizontal. If this single position is too high or low to fit the rider there isn't much you can do about it.
I'm wanting to mount the highway pegs lower on the guard than shown in the pic above, at a position that would leave the pegs pointed downward.
I have subsequently found these Kuryakyn "adjustable stop male mounts" that I think will solve the problem.
I found with my short legs and big feet that if I went too low with the clamp,it interfered with my feet hitting the brake and shift levers, that is when I went to hit the brake my foot would hit the clamp before the pedal, gave me some anxious moments before I could get home to change it.I hope you post some pics when you are done,I am still not totaly satasfied how mine are.
Guess I'll have to do some experimenting once the guard is mounted. I'm already figuring on flopping the clamps over so the pegs actually wind up coming off the front side of the bar and I may need to add some offsets as well. At 6'3", I can afford to offset them forward, just look at my leg position (with forward controls) in my sig pic.
