Default Help Please. Cam shaft gear alignment

I'm in the process of putting a chrome engine kit on the wifes bike, and when I took the crankcase cover off, one of the cam gears came out with it... All the other gears stayed in the case.

How do I make sure this gear is aligned when I go for reassembly? I don't have the shop manual yet, but I was hoping one of you could check yours for me.

Thanks, Steve

each cam gear will have a dash or dot on them. You'll need to remover the rockers boxes and pushrods to slide the came back in, and also to be able to rotate the cams by hand for alignment. But with that said all the cams will have the dash/dot on them, each dot should line up with the dot of the gear next to it. All dots of all gears should also be lined up at the same time......this is the reason to have the pushrods out to allow rotation to get things aligned as well as to not having the tappet hanging down in the cam slot. I can't say for all year sporties but the 94-03 cams, there was always one of the markes that would look like it was half a tooth off when properly aligned, so basically just line the gears up to the closest matching alignment. Hope that helps.

lemme guess, pulled the cam cover off without pulling the cam sensor bolt? lol I did that the first time I took the cover off to polish it, ended up taking the top end apart and getting all pissed off because i couldn't get the rockers back on because the hydraulic tappets wouldn't compress.

Default How about this?

Does this look right? It was the rightmost gear that came off with the cover. I think I have the marks aligned properly, but I'm not positive.

There are a lot of marks on the gears, but the only marks on the two rightmost gears are a "dot" and a "W".

Take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks, Steve

As long as the rightmost cam is the only one that came out, it looks like you got it right. And if do have your rockerbox off, put the new cam cover back on before you put the rocker covers back on, it'll take pressure off the cams so they'll align and slip in the cover more easily.
