Hey all, I just got a 1980 XLS 1000 and I have been working on it more than riding it.
The most recent problem which has me lost, is the starter. Occasionally it would miss when I tried to start it, like the drive wouldn't connect. I bought a new solenoid and installed it with no luck. The ring gear shows some wear but not terrible. I am not sure what the drive gear should look like but it doesn't look terrible either. Basically the starter motor spins like crazy, but won't catch and turn the engine.
Please Help !
Pull your primary cover, remove your spark plugs, and crank the engine over. (Legal Disclaimer: Keep yer fingers outta harm's way. I ain't responsible if'n yer main nose picker gets whacked off at the first knuckle 'cause you were restin' it on some soon-to-be moving part!) Watch the linkage from the solenoid armature shaft to make sure everything is working. The solenoid armature shaft should pull the shifter lever, and the fingers on the lever engaging the groove in the shifting collar should force the pinion gear into the ring gear.
