Default Broken Crank - Best next steps?

My son's Harley had a catastrophic failure. Looks like about a $600-$900 replacement. Any other lower cost options that I can explore? Does someone have a good link of a repair shop that might be able to help and not cost 1/2 the price of the bike??

The Year, Model and Mileage on the bike/motor would be helpful. Not many Harleys are worth less than $3,000 unless they are real old and beat up.

Thats a cheap price for a crank replacement. Have they already split the cases to see if that was all that was damaged?

Plus you need to answer cHarleys question too.

1986 Sportster with 35000 recorded miles. purchased bike as basket for $2000 in April. Had engine bored to 1200 and new paint job. Have about $3000 in her now. Opened up case and only damage was what is on picture. Bike was running all summer until this.

Makes me wonder if the flywheel was dropped or the pinion nut was over tightening ??

That's actually fairly common. It probably leaked a fair amount of compression, and the bottom end could hold it all together under those circumstances. When you install a new top end, everything is sealed up, compression is good...and it puts a lot more stress on the bottom end. Not to mention you went a step further and put one that is almost 350cc's bigger on it. For future reference, when dealing with a motor that either has a lot of miles on it, or it's an 'unknown', rebuild the whole thing.
As far as what you have now, my best advice is go ahead and rebuilt it. There's very few vehicles out there that are 'sound' investments. They all depreciate, so you look to get your value out of it by the enjoyment it provides you. It sounds like maybe you and your son bought the thing to build it together, and up until now, you have been enjoying it.
Please keep in mind however, when talking motor rebuilding, the lowest bid is often not the best one to go with. The price you quoted seems pretty cheap to me. Probably would want to check some references. Actually...checking references on anybody you use-if you have no experience with them, is a good idea.
If it's you and your son on this thing, what about rebuilding it yourselves? It's not hard...you just need to pay attention to what you're doing. Of course you'll need to have a shop press on/off the bearings if they don't already come on the crank, but if you guys built the thing out of boxes, I have no doubt you could do it.
Just an idea...

hell yes that bike is worth the money. If you want to save some, get a manual and rebuild it yourself. I had a lot of fun with mine, and this is the perfect time to take the money that you would have paid the shop, and put a tougher bottom end in it. Rebuilding a motor is not rocket science, just gotta take your time and do it right. Either way, I'd say that having a shop put a new bottom end in for less than a 1000 is a great price! I would have expected it to be more honestly.
