Default Sporty Transmission Problem

I've got a 95 sportster with under 15,000 miles on it. I was out riding last night, and all of the sudden, it was like my transmission was gone. Trying to upshift I got a lot of false neutrals, had a hard time getting it into any gear, etc. Sometimes the upshift felt like there was just nothing there, and sometimes it felt like I was trying to push against a brick wall.

To me, this seems like way too few miles to have a tranny go, and the only change I've made recently was handlebars and a longer clutch cable, but I don't think that should have anything to do with it.

When I limped the bike home, I did notice that the shifter arm (that attaches to the linkage rod that connects to the forward controls) was loose on the shifter shaft going into the primary. It was late, so I didn't get a chance to do any further investigation.

I'm hoping this is something minor and a simple fix, since I don't really want to tear the whole transmission apart, but I'm guessing that's my only option.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Check the obvious first. Tighten your linkage and properly adjust the clutch cable. I recently replaced my clutch cable and had to adjust it twice in 2 weeks. Seemed like it was stretching.

Thanks for the reply. I'm planning on checking the obvious stuff when I get home from work tonight, but I wanted to see if there any other suggestions.

The shift linkage isn't out of adjustment, the shifter arm is just loose on the shifter shaft. It doesn't seem to rotate on the shaft (front to back) but there is just some side-to-side play (almost loose enough to slide off the shaft), which I wouldn't think would affect shifting (but that's the first think I'll tighten)

I did examine the clutch cable last night, and there's no extra play or anything, so I don't think that needs to be adjusted. I will pull the clutch cover off and make sure that's still adjusted correctly...

Any other suggestions?

This happened to mine at 8,000 miles

Different symptoms to yours when it went. Gearbox and lever locked solid. From what you say, and what I have read on various forums, I would hazard a guess that yours could possibly be a bent gear selector. Then again I could be (hopefully) wrong.

On mine it was the striking dogs on 4th gear which sheared off and jammed the gearbox. The only good thing was that it was a reasonably inexpensive fix (luckily) The guy I tookm it to had it apart in 35minutes, Identified the problem and replaced all damaged parts for ÂŁ325. It now runs sweet as a nut.

Thanks for the reply. I've got the primary cover torn off, and am hoping to track down the special tools I need to remove the clutch basket and primary chain, etc. this afternoon.

I'm hoping it could be something as simple as adjusting the shifter pawl, but I'm guessing I'm going to have the pull out the trasmission to be able to determine what's wrong.
