Question Advice needed

I'm planning on a couple of short road trips this spring & summer in an attempt to gear up for a nice long road trip out to the west coast next year. Now, I have never gone cross country before on a bike, so I am starting small. I've had my sportser for 1 season, though I have ridden metric since I was 19, & I've gone on a few 4 - 6 hour joyrides last season. My 1st trip planned, for the end of May, is from Madison, Wi to somewhere in Indiana (a small burg across the border from Chicago/Joliet, I still have yet to get the exact details, but it should be no more than 6 hours on the road, conservetive) I plan on travelling light, say... clothes on my back, change of drawers, socks, & t-shirt, rain gear (leather jacket & chaps)... but I would appreciate anything else anyone would suggest, as experience usually qualifies as the best teacher. My bike is an '04 883C with a small windshield & throwover saddle bags.

Thanks,
Lar

Get a sissy bar so you can strap a roll bag on the rear seat for additional storage that also doubles as a backrest.

6-8 hours is nothing more than a day ride, so a change of drawers, socks and T-shirt is all that's necessary if it's just an overnighter.

One caution on using chaps as rain gear. If you get wet and take the chaps off at your destination, it'll look like you pissed your pants, big time.

Credit Card and Cell phone are also recommended.

Ear plugs are good to help with fatigue.

On a long trip you can UPS clothes and stuff to your destination. This takes a lot of the hassle out of the whole deciding what I really need.
