i am looking for a buell engine or a sportster 1200 engine. maybe this is a stupid question but do you need a title for just the engine. i'm not looking for a frame to come with it. that's later when i buy a rigid. so the question is: do engines come with titles or is the title for the frame?
yup check yer tag office, DMV and see what your state requires when you register a custom made motorcycle. all states are different and they're always changing the rules without notice.

New engines or cases will usually come with a certificate of origin. Same thing if you buy a frame. If you're going to build a bike from scratch and get it titled check your state laws. You may have to prove where all those goodies came from.
It depends on the state in which you reside. You need to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
In the State of California, the Title is on the frame, but the Motor number is listed on the Title. If you change one or the other, you will need a new Title.
In the State of Tennessee, (where I am from) the Title is just on the frame. If you change the Frame, you need to re-title. If you change the motor, you just need to keep the Certificate of Origin
