stock harley mufflers are almost pluged shut,to meet emision and sound standards, you have to knock the 2 plugs out of the middle to make it run rite, i have done dozens and it does not damage a thing.. i am a mechanic not a yuppie reading bad info on the net

I would have to say do not put the heavy breather on unless you do something about the exhaust first or at the same time as putting the heavy breather on. As mentioned before you can knock out part of the baffle in the stock mufflers to fix the exhaust problem, or you can buy all new slip on mufflers that are higher flowing.

Don't forget you will have to retune the bike after putting the new air cleaner on.

Well..............Let's back up and see if I get your question right.

You say you want to install the heavy breather and wonder if the stock exhaust is restrictive.

The the stock exhaust is very restrictive...The good news is, because it is so restrictive, you can install the intake and not worry about your tune untill you decide to also change the exhaust.

Is that the answer you were looking for?

Oinker, i guess i didn't ask correctly, my question was would the addition of the breather do any good if i keep the stock exhaust, I was planning to install the heavy breather + Thundermax + autotune, but won't be able to get exhaust until later on down the road due to lack of funds for all of it at the same time (breather, Thundermax, exhaust) what is your opinion on the order of parts install, should i get the exhaust first or what?

Yes get the exhaust first. Doing the exhaust only you do not have to get a re-map of the fuel system. You can just bolt on the new exhaust and be good to go. Then save up for the air cleaner and fuel system to install down the road.

Thanks for the extra info

Good choice on the Tmax A/T!

Now that you revealed the rest, I'd say first go with the Tmax. Trust me on this, I have one on my Road King and I'm fixin to order one for my Iron. I have a Power Commander on my other Sporty and will eventually change it out with a Tmax.

I'd add the Tmax first, then it really doesn't matter which mod you do next.

The Tmax alone will grant you a decent increase in power and then allow you to experiment with all afterwards.

Thanks guys, I think I'll do the TMax A/T first, as you suggested oinker, that way no matter what i choose to go with second, i'll be ok.
oinker, how was the gas mileage after the addition of the TMax ?

kind regards,

I was getting 42-44 on my stock Road King before I installed a Power Commander and had it dyno'ed. Then it dropped to 32.

After I installed the Tmax and correct base map, then rode it a couple of weeks, it was back to 40 MPG and has remained there after a year and several exhaust and A/C swaps.

It's possible to regain some MPG with the Power Commander by modifying to maps and a lot of trial and error, same for the Tmax.

I've considered the PCV with A/T, but don't care for the piggyback idea and having to hide all the extra hardware and wires.

Get the exhaust first and then worry about the rest as you get money for mods. Exhaust is one of the coolset mods you can do and it's easy. Also who really cares about MPG on a bike? I mean it's a bike with a 3.3 G tank so it's going to do ok. I have the 3.3 G tank and my fuel light comes on around 90-100 Miles or if i ride hard it comes on at about 85 miles.
