I can't think of any reason that you shouldn't buy used as long as they are in good condition. As far as doing it yourself......I for one wouldn't let the dealership charge me for an hour of labor for that. It is really easy just basically bolting them on and hooking up the brake and shifter.

Look on eBay. Find the HD part number and run a search. You'll find some $10-30 cheaper (without tax and sometimes free shipping).

And like Grugrux34 said, you should install them yourself. If you're unsure, invite some buddies that ride over and spot them some beer and pizza (that will be my plan in March).

It's a very easy mod to do yourself just make sure you get all the bolts tight to spec and use loctite. If buying them used maybe ask if the owner still has the instructions.

+1 on the loctite....I didn't use it when I initially did my forwards and my shifter peg broke loose on the way to work one morning....not fun.

easy as pie to install. Takes all of 15 minutes if you have all the tools and loctite in front of you. Dealer probably will charge you at least an hour to do it.

I for one wouldn't let the dealer do something that I could do myself. With that being said, get a shop manual to go along with those forward controls. It will pay for it's self in short order.
