Don't think it would be crazy. Would be nice to change positions up a bit on a longer ride. I like to put mine back on the passenger pegs on a longer ride. Not sure if it would work though. I am sure you could figure a way to make it work but I don't think they will bolt on with the forwards. Probably gonna take some fabrication or some ingenuity to make it happen.
Haven't down it on my Sportster, but on my WideGlide (that I use most for long runs) I installed the mid-mount chrome bracket and pegs.
They mount right to the stock pre-drilled locations on the frame, and after a few hundred miles on the road it's nice to be able to change foot positions from time to time....
I did it on my sons bike left side bolt right on right side you have to grind down the bracket for the brakerod and you have to remove the exhaust to get to the bolt holes make sure you grind out enough or you have to keep taking off the exhaust till it is right and that is a pain
Would you explain a little more about what you're grinding? What year is your boy's bike? Thanks
2005 XL883C Shown below. You can see the two black plastic plugs inserted into the bolt holes that would receive the bolts for mid brackets. You can also see the forward control brake rod and factory exhaust connector. Not a lot of room:
I have often thought about doing this exact same thing to my 2007 XL883 Sportster. It would be different and unique and not something that anyone else can just go into the dealer and buy off the shelf. This modification would truly be a one-of-a-kind type of deal and help set your ride apart from all the other Sportsters out there. I usually always put my feet on the rear passenger pegs on long trips as it helps me lean into the wind and is much more comfortable to me and for the way I ride. That being said, I still would like to put the forward controls on my bike in addition to the mid controls that I already have installed from the factory as another place to put my feet during a long haul and still have the ability to use the foot controls from both the mid position and the forward position too! Good luck with your project and ride safe out there!
My sons bike is an 06 and he had forward controls already. We picked up a set of mid mounts from a guy I work with . The grinding comes in on the footpeg mounting bracket for the mid mount the rod for the brake lever will ride right where the mount goes if you grind out about 1/4 of an inch just enough to let the rod sit there and have movement that is all you need, as I said before make sure it has plenty of movement before you put exhaust back on exhaust is a bitch to get to header bolts to many times
