Question 883/1200 Conversion Question....

Hi All,

I have an opportunity for a Great Deal on a new 09 Iron and the Dealer offered the 1200 uograde Kit for 900, which sounds good/fair to me, Also, any Sprocket or gearing changes I should know about? All the ratios will migrate over?

Thanks in advance,
John "Another Newbie"

What dealer? $900 seems like a good price from what I've read on here. I've thought about the 1200 kit but might go with a 1250 kit with stage one heads and cams. As for the sprocket, you can change it to the 1200 wheel or keep the 883 for better acceleration but higher RPM's at highway speed than the 1200 sprocket. Is it the SE kit?

edit: I believe you will still turn lower RPM's than the stock 883 engine would turn at highway speed with the 1200 kit due to greater torque and HP.

Thanks for the Reply,

The Dealer is "Mikes Famous" in New Castle Delaware. Right now the Plan stands at the Kit, SE Heavy Breather, V&H Big Radius and Stage 1 Tune... I Might go for the V&H Fuel Pack, if it won't void the Warranty. I already checked with V&H on what FP to use (3066) and have the settings.
The Seat and Pillion from a 48 are compatible, so it will be a bit of a different "Iron".

Frankly, if the Package price isn't right, I'll just wait for a 48....

I'd asked that question about the Gearing and sprocket because I was concerned about the RPM's and Running Hptter....

Make sure you are getting heads in that kit. My bike is currently in the shop getting its upgrade, and I was given two prices, one which did not include heads and one that did. From all I have read, you are going to want to spend the extra money and get the heads, or have the 883 heads worked on.

Any increase in horsepower or torque or engine displacement will have absolutely no effect on the engine RPM at any given speed. To change the engine RPM at a given speed you will HAVE to change the ratio on either of the two final drive pulleys that connect to the belt drive or on either of the two sprockets that connect to the primary chain or on the gears themselves inside of the transmission and you could also change the diameter of the rear tire. More horsepower and more torque and more piston displacement will get your motorcycle up to 80 MPH much faster/quicker than a stock engine will, but unless you change the size of something between the sprocket that is turned by the motor and the pulley that turns the rear wheel, the RPMs will still be the same as a stock bike at 80 MPH. Good luck with your 1200 conversion and ride safe out there!

Don't really need 'em IMO if you are just doing the big bore kit. If doing cams etc. then I would agree with you.

AS stated earlier, get the head work done, you won't really gain much just by using bigger cylinders and pistons. You still need to let the air and fuel into the engine, and that is accomplished by the valves. Get the head work done, or use 1200 heads.
