Default transmission question

New guy to street bikes. I want to change my transmission oil and check the primary chain because my manuel says that may be why it is jerky at low speeds. Between the manuel and reading the forums I am a little confused. If I drain the oil and stand the bike upright to fill from the primary cover, have I changed the oil in both the transmission and the primary or are they two separate areas?

If you are talking Harley, it has separate oil for the transmission and primary.

Let us know what you are working with.

WRONG - SORRY dude but this is the Sportster Section.

The Sporty has a shared Primary/Tranny. 1 quart of fluid takes care of both.

You don't need to remove the primary cover to refill the primary/tranny oil. You can add it through the chain inspection cover. That's much easier and just 2 screws, and you'll have that cover off to adjust the chain.

Thats why I asked what he was working with. Guess I should pay closer attention to what section is listed when I look at the new posts.

Changing the tranny fluid will not help with the bike being Jerky at slow speeds. It does however sound like a primary chain that needs adjusting.
