No don't think, have some one check it if you don't know forsure. Do you know which cover the primary is. Have someone sit on the bike and hold it upright and take the primary cover off and look down inside it. If it look dry dump 1qt. in it.
Damn... So I keep draining the primary when I change the oil however haven't had any problems? I am only filling the oil up from dipstick/oil cap. There is a seperate place for Primary to fill? Now I'm kidna wondering what the hell is going on!
YIKES. You've been running a dry tranny.
And there is NO NEED to remove the primary cover to fill with gear oil. Must easier and less opportunity to dis-lodge a pesky little gasket if you add the quart of tranny oil through the primary chain inspection cover. Also you don't have to get the bike level if you fill the tranny this way.

Well, damn I feel so stupid. I've been running with no oil in the transmission. The bike run find and sound, shifts normal. Am I a lucky S.O.B. or should I pull the clutch and see what damage is done? The chain looks like its fine, just dry- no kinks or damage. The remnants of oil that was left didn't smell burned or anything.
uuuh, pulling the clutch isn't something to do just to check things out. That is a ROYAL PITA. I would suggest you get some Mobil 1 gear oil for the tranny. 75w90.

and if u can get it inspected
Just put some gear oil to the bottom of the teeth and you should be good. Or take it to someone that knows how to change the primary oil. I'm glad you asked the question before some major damage was done. There is No such thing as a dumb question.
Ok, so there is no dumb question so here is mine. When I had the 15,000 service done on my Sporty they asked about going to Synthetic oil since you can then use the same in the primary. Do you guys recommend NOT doing that and using a specific gear oil like 75w90?
I thought for ease of things using the same was ok??
I think on the newer Sportster they require gear oil and not engine oil. I could be wrong. I have always just used syn gear oil. It's really not that complicated
