Well, I'm just going to hope to god everything is ok. It made me sick to my stomach opening up the primary cover and looking in and not seeing any oil. I picked up some Supertech 75w140 synthetic gear oil and it seems to be ok. I probably sound like a complete moron on here but I'm glad I asked. Thanks all.
ok so shoot me in the right direction. I am new to the motorcycle world. I was passed down my dads bike and just changed the oil in it. I pulled the plug that is underneath the bike, drained the oil and i watched it drain and i know its the engine oil because when i looked there was no oil in the oil resevior. I added that oil to the right specifications. I have an 04.....is there anything else i should do when i change the oil....of course i changed the filter as well. How often should i do the tranny and how do i do it.
Ok, so there is no dumb question so here is mine. When I had the 15,000 service done on my Sporty they asked about going to Synthetic oil since you can then use the same in the primary. Do you guys recommend NOT doing that and using a specific gear oil like 75w90?
I thought for ease of things using the same was ok??
If you use Mobil 1 75W90 gear oil, it is a synthetic. I'm sure that other brands are as well. It has only been in the last couple of years, that HD finally moved toward using gear oil or Syn oil in the tranny. I ran just Mobile 1 motor oil in my tranny for probably 20,000 miles. Maybe more than that. I don't remember when I switched.

If you pulled the plug that looks like a typical oil drain plug on a car, that was the tranny plug. The engine oil drain is on a rubber hose. I believe in 04 the spec was to change the tranny oil every 5,000 miles. In 06, they changed the cut of the gears, and started recommending tranny oil change every 10,000 miles.
Myself, and many other members here with a lot more knowledge about the molecular structure of oils run Mobil-1 gear oil 75w90 in the tranny. One quart. Just pull the primary chain inspection cover and pour in the oil. No need to remove the derby cover.
You can use any regular synthetic motor oil. I just think it makes since to run motor oil in the motor, and gear oil in the tranny. That is also HD's current recommendation.
So it still blows my mind how it was running fine without fluid.. Hypothetically though- it's trashed but is still working on it's last limb... Whats all in there? The clutch, chain and gears for the chain? All in all that has to be just a couple hundred dollars in parts? The service manual is a little deceptive on whats in there...
I recently replaced the clutch in my bike. That alone was $200 for the parts, plus $55 for the special tool you must have to open the clutch basket. There is also a ball and ramp assembly, the primary drive chain I bet is NOT cheap. I have no clue what would be involved with replacing the gears in the tranny.
The alternator is also in that hole. This would be the least likely to be damaged by running dry I think. I just replaced the stator part of the alternator. That part was $110. More special tools involved for this, and you will have to have air tools.
All in all, if you are thinking about just replacing everything......it will be MAJOR not only financially, but those are not easy replacements. Just the process of replacing the stator was a much more difficult task, than rebuilding the engine.
I would just run it, and see how things go. You might have dodged a bullet. I'm not too sure about the 75W140 gear oil that you mentioned. Most of us here use 75W90 gear oil.
