Exclamation She's sputtering.....

Ok, so i have 2000 xl1200c pretty much stock except for the screamin eagle II slip ons that i installed a few weeks ago. A couple days ago it started acting funny when trying to get on the highway. When I leave the house, after a few minutes warming up, it will run fine at low speeds and not too heavy on the throttle. As soon as i start to open her up to get on the highway it starts to sputter along and not accelerate. If i give it more gas it just sputters worse. I thought maybe it wasnt catching second gear so i switched to third and would gun it a little, but it would do the same thing. After a little while of pushing in the clutch and giving it gas in second or third gear it will start to run fine and not sputter again until it sits for a couple hours.
Could this be the clutch?

Its a far cry from clutch to carb.

The carb could be dirty / need adjusting / bad gas / etc.

The seals on the intake manifold could be bad.

The diaphragm on the slide could be bad.

The cap in the accelerator pump could be bad.

Might just be time for a good carb clean and rebuild.

+1 - nothing indicates a clutch issue.

Try a tank or two of seafoam and see if that helps. It does sound like a dirty carb to me.

A re-jet is not necessary for a slip-on only change.

Dont have to if i just added the slip-ons...right? A/C is still stock. And it only started doing this a couple days ago. Pipes were changed a couple weeks ago. Maybe a little over a month now.

Im glad its not the clutch though.
Im about to do the Stage 1 upgrade so maybe its a good time to clean out the carb since im going in there anyway.

Thanks for all your input!

any pipe that changes the air in or air out ratio requires a rejet, even slip-ons. In some cases the difference is to the intake setup is very minute but i do promise you that slip-ons are free-er flowing. The header is just a pipe that offers no back pressure. the baffleing in the mufflers is what gives this.

hmmm....ran fine after the pipe swap. It started sputtering just a few days ago. I think its been the same experience for the majority of the people on here that a rejet was not required after only adding slip-ons.
