If you get it too tight you'll hear a whine from the primary. In that case, just back the adjuster off a bit.
Charlie,
Do you think the whine would be continuous? I only seem to have the noise when I'm not accelerating. I've loosened my chain a bit and switched to Mobil 1 75W-90 Gear Oil and the noise hasn't quieted much if at all.
Well I adjusted his chain this past Saturday and it was so easy-The dealer wanted $67.50 to do it and it took me 10 mins with getting the tools out. His bike has about 7K on the clock and that chain was super loose, like about 1" of freeplay-not good, but was not making nosie. The engine was warm, but not hot and I adjusted it to about 1/2" of freeplay. What I did was have him sit on the bike, took the inspection cover off and then put the bike in second gear and moved it back a few times to see if the chain got tighter-it did not. I would say if you use the width of the chain method you will be fine since that is about where I set his at and there is no whine or any noise at all.
