I started having problems with the ignition switch on my 1999 XL883 a little while ago so I replaced it. Really, very easy to do, man! Disconnect the battery first and then unbolt the gas tank and remove it. The ignition switch is in the front gas tank mounting bracket. Just one screw to remove to be able to take the ignition switch out of the bracket! I cut the original harness wires very close to the harness and I used the wire crimps to attach the new wires from the new ignition to the original wires on the harness. I used some electrical tape to cover the new splices and the wire crimps and I remounted the ignition back into the gas tank mounting bracket and I replaced the gas tank back onto the frame and re-connected the battery and I fired her up! No problems with the ignition anymore. Give it a shot, you can do it man!
