Default Heritage Starting Problems

My friends 07 Heritage died while out on a ride yesterday.

We checked the obvious; battery, wiring etc. and nuthin was loose. Battery wouldn't work even when jumped to another bike.

I remember a while back seeing someone have problems with the actual rotary ignition switch on the console of another softail. Does anyone have the instructions or directions on how to troubleshoot a suspected bad switch..?

If the problem is in the Ignition Switch then the bike will have no power what so ever, the Head Light will be OFF when you turn Ignition ON. Is that the case?

Troubleshooting for ignition Switch problem is darn easy:
1.) Remove the console
2.) Unplug the Ignition Switch Connector:
- Examine the wires for broken wires
- Examine the connector for corrosion, melting , etc.
3.) Get a jumper wire (a heavy duty paper clip will do too) On the side of the Harness Connector to the Ignition Switch:
- Short the center (red wire) pin with the Red/Blak wire - Ignition Should come ON; you should be able to start the bike. Then replace the Ignition Switch (5 min job)

If No Ignition comes On when you short the Red and the Red/Black wire then the problem is in the wiring, not in the switch.
Check the Main Fuse; Check voltage at the Red wire of the Ign Switch - it should be 12V (or whatever your battery voltage is)

Yep. Pulled my dash off yesterday, and lo and behold it looks like one wire had been arcing and melted a decent size spot in the connector !! Could have gotten ugly......

With the switch in the on position, the main headlamp comes on very dim...

This may wind up being the battery (hopefully). Just wanted to be ready to help if the battery isn't the answer.

We were out riding in Utah last year on a 8 day Grand Circle ride... A gal riding a Deluxe ran into this issue. The switch was bad and her trip turned into a nightmare ... I watched the T/S process but couldn't remember the details. This is good stuff to know for later on the road.

Could be the battery is too low, or could be that there is way too much corrosion buit up in the Ignition Switch connector. Other than that there is no other reason for the head light to be dim (within the symptoms you described). The only things in common with the Head Light and the starting circuit are the battery, the Ignition Switch and the Main Fuse.
You may want to check the sockets of the Main Fuse as well - for corrosion.

put a meter on the battery, and check the voltage, or take the battery to a shop to have it tested. Has he tried putting it on a charger? If the bike has the original battery, it's probably time to get a new one. I bet the battery is toast.
Mine original battery lasted 5 years.
