Default '883 Power?

Hi, i'm new to harleys, but not to riding. Many of you may not like me because i've always been a "crotch rocket" rider. I also race them, with WERA, if anyone is familiar with that. Anyhow, I'm planning to go to collage soon so I have to give up racing for a while and i'm considering getting another street bike, but I think I would get in too much trouble on an R6 on the street, so i'm considering picking up a left over black standard 883 because i like the looks and the price. My question is, does the 883 have enough power for the open road, or is it sweating to cruise at 80? I've rode some 1200's but no 883's. Has anyone been dissapointed with their 883 and wish that they had gotten athe bigger one, or is it enough? Any opinions would be appreciated!

If your looking to cruise at 80. I wouldn't get a 883. In stock trim top speed is about 90-95. That pushing it. the 883 crusies along at 60-65. The more mods you do the better the low end ,mid-range poweryou get.

If you want to cruise at 80 mph I would go with the 1200. My 1200 will cruise at 80 mph all day long no problem. I also used to be a crotch rocket guy. I like cruising up Pacific Coast Hwy with my Harley buddies, but I also like tarring up the twisties with my crotch rocket buddies every now and then too. You would be amazed at how well the Sporster handles. I can't compete with them on long straitaways because they have more than twice as much horse power as I do, but on nice twisty mountain roads I can hang right with them.

I don't have any experience with the crotch rocket, but it seems to me that their design wills you to twist the throttle wildly. My 883, on the other hand, says "relax, check out the scenery and enjoy the ride." I think that if you put away your racing side and get into a groove, you'll really dig the Harley. [sm=biker.gif] Besides, the Sportsters are the coolest bike on the Harley line.

I am also new to Harley's, but have been riding crotch crickets over 20 years. My first was an 86 Ninja 1000. Now I have a 94 CBR900RR. I also used to race them. I just bought a 98 Sportster 1200. I love them both for different reasons. The Harley is cool for the way I feel and others feel about me, and the compliments, and just cruising. The crotch cricket is by far the better pure motorcycle as far as all around performance. On the 1200 Custom I put drag bars and a Mikuni 42" Smooth Bore carb with SE pipes. The Harley runs awsome, but much different than the CBR900RR. At this point I couldn't sell either. I love them both. To better answer your question, I really don't feel you would be happy with an 883, unless you planned to put a 1250 kit in it. I know I wouldn't.

Your crotch rocket is aggresive, heart pounding style riding. Your Sportster can be laid back, relaxed and smell the roses ridiing. (Atleast it is to me).

When you want to kick ***, the Sportster can turn into the hot rod of the Harley line up (except V-rod).
