Why the premium?
I got a brand new 1200L out the door for $8500.00.
I get a ride for 2 up and a 4.5 gallon gas tank, nice black and chrome motor...

I would, I mean what does it hurt, all they can say is no.

The Dealership here will not negotiate anything, I was in the store one day and the sales manager put it very bluntly, actually rudely, that they will not under any circumstances wheel and deal.

I hate that dealership, but unfortunately they had the best deal around for my bike and i couldnt pass it up. Otherwise Id have gone elsewhere.

Good luck!

Dave

In San Diego if you can get a new bike for msrp you got a smoking deal. Tax and license in CA is another $1200 or so.

if you gotta have a 48 youre gonna pay more- my opinion is that you should watch the used bikes in your area. i bought my last two bikes for a very large discount. both had less than 1k miles and i paid a whole lot less off of retail. my '08 sporty (i bought it from him in '08) was around $8k and the guy already put the pipes, air sucker and lotsa other stuff on it for me. then i spent another $4k or so making it exactly mine (fuel management, seats, changed out lighting, lots more chrome, etc). so for the cost of a new bike, i got a customized almost new bike that works perfectly for me-
got both of mine off of craigslist, and there are several other used bike sites out there.
good luck with finding your bike and cant wait to see pics!!

hi , i bought a new nightster 3 weeks ago , its now done just over 500 miles , on shitty english roads and i do 30 miles each way to work , not in the rain , i use a car for that , i wouldnt want to do much more distance than that each way because i dont think its comfy enough , im 5,11 and 19 english stone , 200+ pounds , the bike has enough pull and top speed but without any wind protection 60 -70 - mph is best and most relaxing , it will easily top 100 mph, but you realy dont want to go there for more than a few seconds , its my first harley , and the worse handling and most uncomfortable thing ive owned , i love it though , the v twin thing tweeks my nipples, it makes me smile and every one thinks its a realy cool bike , its bog standard , but i plan the usual mods over the winter , i feel the chap is picking a wrong en for the job he wants it for . 60 miles eachway , id be looking at a tourer , pan european or something , 883 no way , no protection from the wind, no guts small tanks , all stack up against the 883 sportsters ,a 1200 even with a windshild would be a **** bike for that sort of milage and look sad aswell , looking cool is great but do them miles often enough and you will be in the truck every day and ride for fun weekends , which is what the things are made for , fine in towns or suburbs , 20 -30 each way with a little motorway (freeway) work in fine weather , and youll love it ,anything else and the sporty 1200, 48, nightster or otherwise will be a wrong move , and you,ll be changing sooner rather than later , and loosing money on the upgrade , get a secondhand 1200 and try it for a while and if you have to sell it you should break more or less even ,if it works for you , then get a new one (order that lovely 48 ), sorry to put a downer on it , but its a fact , its not the boy for the commuting thing . I LOVE MY NIGHTSTER THOUGH , but its just for fun in the sun

Sounds like he's set on a 48. Hope he's ready to fill up when he gets to work and again when he gets home. He'll spend more time at the gas station then on the road. Luckily enough the 48 should hold it's value pretty well so it'll be easy to dump once he realizes the mistake.

Get the 1200 - this is from a 4'10" 115# woman. I didn't fit on the 1200L probably because of the seat, so I got an 883L instead, I'm ready to convert it to 1200 already!

if its your first bike, dont buy a brand new harley. go buy a beater bike for this season and put some frikken miles on it. you may not even like riding. and to be honest, you're more likely to drop it or get yourself killed in your first season.
