thanks for the responses guys...don't worry about scaring me away or anything, all the info is useful regardless if its not "what i want to hear". there aren't too many "beater" bikes around here and most of them are either brand new or used 1200 Sportsters or Dyna's, etc. So i figured since i will be spending ALMOST new price on a used bike (since 1200 Sportsters keep their value) that i would just spend a bit more and get a new one, of course if something pops up that i like and is for the right price i'll try to get it....nothing is set in stone just yet. my other option would be the Night Train, i like that bike a lot also, but its also ~$14k used and thats one main reason i'm shying away from it. i don't mind stopping for gas if i need to seeing how i have to get up early and leave early anyway and it may take 3 minutes to put 2-3 gal of gas in the tank. i think i've seen most reviews state the 48 will get ~80 miles to one tank, so that would be fine for my commute, but when i ride with my brothers who have: 05' Fat Boy, 09' Fat Bob, and my buddy with even his 10' Iron then i may be stopping more often for gas, but then again its just for cruising around not for going places where you're in a hurry and must be there. so we won't mind going for 50 or so miles and letting me get gas, then take off again.

keep the info/advice coming

thanks,

-John

*this will be my first Harley but not the first time i've rode, but it has been a few years; which is why i take the MSF class in a couple weeks.

Im 5-eleven and 300 lbs. My 883 pulls me round just fine. 80+ mph to work on free way, plenty of throttle left. That said, I would have preferred a 1200, but I couldn't pass up the deal I got and even after upgrade'n to a 1250 I will spend less then if I would have bought a 1200; that will be less powerfull, then this 883 will be when i'm done. ../shrug.

You've got a buddy with an Iron, and that's one of the bikes you are considering... why not take the MSF course and then ask to take his bike for a little spin, in a parking lot, around the block, where ever. I'm pretty sure you'll know right away if the 883n will do it for you. It's a capable little scoot.

Get a sportster if thats what you really want and can only afford it, but then again you would be happier in the long run IMO if you bought a few years older Big Twin, a dyna at least, and if you're set on a brand new sporster get the respectable 1200cc engine at least. Good luck on your bike. Get something you won't outgrow or plan on sidelining it a few years later... in my experience.

Im 6'5" 220lbs. I have a 05 883c. I love it even though I know Im to big for it. Everybody I know keeps telling me that. It has good power for my kind of riding. At times I do wish I had the 1200. Mainly on the highway to get away from people. If you want to keep this bike I say get the 1200. If you only want it for a short while I say save your money and get a 883. Take the money you save for upgrades to make it fit you or save it for a bigger bike. I have only had my sporty for one year and already wish I had a bigger bike.

Guys, I'm not trying to pi$$ anyone off. I'm just saying bikes are like boots. If at all possible, buy the one that best physically fits you. I'm not bashing Sportsters or anyone that rides them. Hell, some of my best friends ride Sportys (just a pun, don't get your panties in a wad).

Can anyone honestly agree that there's almost nothing worse than spending a bunch of cash on something, then a week later realizing it's not what you want or need?
