Default damn it...

I need to find out how much play front to back the drive sprocket should have. Mine moves about 2" then stops hard against ??? in both directions. I pulled the clutch cover again and checked for any free play as to a bearing issue. When I have it on the stand running in gear the belt seems to change speed when the noise happens. It remind me of a chain slipping on a worn out sprocket. All the cogs look good on the belt and bike. I have worked on bikes for years but have very little experience with Harleys. I am up for any help or suggestions...thanks
