For me, at 5-10, fwd controls and drag bars were a must. I really think comfort is a very personal decision. What works for me might not work for you. I like the feel of apes but don't like the way my arms feel after riding in that position very long. The feel for drag bars is better as my arms are long and feel relaxed as I'm not fighting gravity--but that's just me. Go to a dealer and sit on a few bikes (don't have to be exactly like yours) and get a feel for what set-up you prefer. Watch out for the parts guys who will try to sell you a set of integrated bars with risers for $350....
I have found apes to be more comfortable. Although being in Illinois I don't have many curves to blast around so I can't comment on the alleged decrease in manueverability.
Apes if you have a windshield and drag bars if you don't . I dont have a windshield so it's drag bars for me. They keep you leaned into the wind just enough to be very comfortable at cruising speeds and highway speeds too.
i think i have 16-18 apes, i love them, the guy i bought the bike off of had back injuries, i myself have a messed up left arm, so leaning on cafe or drag bars hurt after a while. the apes alow me to really jut sit on the bike, im not really holding on to the bars, on long rides i can easly ride 3 diffrent ways to fight fatique,,, i have gone 300 miles in one trip and my arm back and shoulder were fine. i do have mid controls.
I've got drag bars... no risers and forward contols,i find it a comfortable option at higher speads i put my feet back on the passenger pegs.
You'll probiblly have to try out the options and select the style of bars best suited for your personal stance.
I had mid controls ,haveing ridden jap bikes for years but found on the nighster with a pasenger on the back on longer rides i couldn't move my feet to the rear pegs,so i switched to the forwards and so far it works for me.H.
