Hey, I got a stupid question: What is the red "key" light on the speedo indicate? ('08 nightster).
Today on the 2nd hottest day of the year I was out cruising doing 55 when all of a sudden I lost my bandana. So I went back to look for it. As I was idling on the side of the road I noticed this little red "key" light on. I don't have an owners manual so I can't look it up. I have a Haynes manual, but it's not listed. Is this the "check engine" light? I thought that was a little engine shape. I could be wrong. Once again, This is on the speedo, not the light panel.
So anyway, I found my bandana and proceeded on my way. The light went out & did not come back. So what is my bike telling me? Was it overheating while I was sitting there idling? Thanks for any input.
The red key light is for many things depending on how its illuminated. In your case, staying on more than 8 seconds shows that a current trouble code is present. They is a sticky in here about how to obtain the trouble codes.
When I got my bike used, I ordered the owners manual and the service manual. Both have info the other doesn't and have proven to be invaluable. However at times I wish I had the electrical diagnostic manual. Yet one more thing to add to the list LOL.

The red key is for the alarm system. Since they don't make separate components, the key will show on all models. If you had an alarm system, the key light would go out in the presence of a fob. Well in the presence of a fog with a good battery anyway.
I have it on the 07 FXSTC but not on the 010 Super Glide but it still has the light.
It could also be a voltage irregularity. I put LED bulbs in my turns and stops. If I use the turns (seldom) the low voltage of the LEDs trips the light. Could be a bunch of things, wish I could be more help.
I have a 2007 Nightster with ~4K miles on it. Mine has just started coming on but then goes off. I have not changed the batteries in the FOB so I am hoping that is what is causing it. The manual says to change the batteries every year. It also says something like if the light stays on to take in for service without any explanation.
