2009 Nightster, 7500 miles, every once in a while when I turn it on (not started yet) the fuel pump will let out what can only be described as a "whistle" type of sound. Not sure what this is or what it means. Any ideas?
Mine does the same thing if its been sitting a while or if its sits outside in the heat. Mine is a loud screaching almost like nails on a chalkboard but in a lower tone. I believe its normal and its just the dry pump trying to suck up fuel and prime the engine. BTW I have 20k miles on my '08 and haven't had any fuel related problems.

That is exactly what it is, its the fuel pump priming the engine.
It has awlays kinda whirred when it primed eveything, but the whistle is pretty new. Just wanted to check to see if it's anything to be concerned about.

the wifes started the same thing about a week ago. sounds like a jet spooling up. after it starts it gives a 1 second squeal like its vapor locked. runs fine, dont do it all the time? you're not alone...
If you think you have a leaky hose on the fuel pump open the fuel cap and with a flash light (not a lighter) look in the tank for fuel spray when you turn the ignition on and it primes up.
Mine did this crazy spool up sound like turbo spool once. It was after it had been sitting for a week or so without running. It was also VERY low on fuel. As soon as it did it I turned the bike off and scratched my head. Went to turn it on again and no crazy spool sounds, just the normal prime sound. Went to top off the gas tank and it's never done it since. I'm thinking maybe my issue was that it was pretty much on fumes at that low of fuel level and the pump had nothing to prime. Who knows. Knocks on wood but bike runs great and it only did it that one time.
In June, while in Nashville, fuel made high pitched noise, after setting out in sun,but did not stop. Went to Boswells HD in Rivergate and they changed the fuel pump. Ok since, had 22,060 miles at that time.
