Hope you problems get straightened out...
Since you posted this I was looking through the manual that I down loaded to see how much trouble it was to change the stator....
Thing I hate is that ... You have to buy a part to see if that is the problem.. then if the original one was good,.. you are stuck with the part you bought and the stealer won't let you return it.

A volt meter with a continuity tester does the trick. Plus for your sator if your gear oil smells like *** and oil, your stator is cooked. (thanks to cHarley for that tidbit).

I don't see what the stator has to do with the speedometer, except it might stop working when the battery goes dead...

It sounds like something a shop would tell you when they want to rip you off.

I just don't see the connection.
Like if they told you one piston was out of round, and that is why the speedometer stopped working...

It says it right in the manual under troubleshooting The Sator or self-canceling signals not shutting off and/or Speedo issues. All three tests can lead you to one or the other depending on the results of each test.

Have you read the manual? Its in there.

There is also an electrical diagnostic manual that can be found on ebay for around $20. It will tell you how to check anything electrical on your bike.

My book does not say anything about the stator for a loss of speedometer serial data or a dtc for a bad vss.

The stator only charges the battery (through the voltage regulator).
If the stator goes bad, the battery stops getting charged.
Is the speedometer not working used as a low battery charge diagnostic?
Sounds crazy if it is...

thanks for everyones help..
Changed the oil, so while I was waiting for it all to quit dripping I figured I'd take on this sensor
I spent 8 hours working on the bike yesterday... just LOTS of stuff to take off.
I figure I made it more complicated than it had to be..??
First I had to follow the wire from the sensor to see where it plugged in under the seat... so remove seat, remover battery, remove battery box, etc etc..
Traced down the wires and the contacts. Cleaned them thoroughly and put the connectors back together. (while I was there I just went ahead and cleaned ALL of them.)

Anyway,.. I went around to the right side and started trying again to take the allen head screw out. (I wanted to clean it all while I was at it)
Worked for hours trying to find a way to get the damn screw out..
Took the oil lines off coming from the oil tank to make room,.. cut off an allen wrench to just a stub... I could go on and on.. long story short I never did figure a way to get it out.

But I did find that when I went and drove it this morning that the speedometer worked.... so cleaning the connectors worked...hope it don't quit... LOL

THANKS again for everyones input
