Default What is a normal hot temperature reading

Hi all,,,,,

I recently purchaced a new 07, XL50, and i was in NY city this weekend stuck in traffic on Canal Street, when i noticed that the bike was getting pretty hot and started to idle slightly lower..down around 950 instead of 1000.. I think the temp was 210... Is this normal, or is this high....

The bike has 270 miles on it.... Someone also told me that i can put an oil cooler system attached to it ... Any one hear of such a thing....???

Congrats on the scoot... They are a hoot to rip around on......

950-1050 is normal idle.....

210, was that your oil temp?

Operating temp on an XL is 260 to 280, at the cylinder head.....

Idle is controlled by the ECM, and can only be adjusted through Digital Tech.....

Heat Management is NOT a part of the XL Software....

I bought the gage for the oil tank. I have a 06 1200XL Custom.
The dealer told me 200 to 250 is normal, higher when it is hot.
I never got over 215. Stop and go on the freeway, highway or anywhere.

62996-04 is the part number for my 06 sportster.

Mine runs about the same, more sometimes when it's hot out. There is an add-on oil cooler in the parts catalog that sticks out to the side to catch air, but it seems like it's not really necessary.

It seems like temp is only really a problem in stop and go conditions anyway. In local traffic here, in >100 temperatures I wouldn't get much above 210. Given that the slightly higher temp is due to air not running across the engine as consistently, would an oil cooler even help that much if air is not running across it either? I guess it gets the oil a little further away from the heat of the engine, but I'm a bit curious as to how effective it would be in worst case conditions anyway without a fan that runs air over the cooling fins like a radiator would.

I recently got a dipstick temp gauge for my 06 883C. The highest I saw was about 235 deg this while running at 75mph on the freeway in 100 deg temps. I talked to the mechanics at the dealership here in Boise & he said not to be too concerned untill the temp runs up to about 270, at that point the oil will start to break down. I'm running totally stock so I figure with the catalytic converters & the bike not breathing the way it should thats why I run a little high. My buddys 94 883c on the same ride ran about 210 degrees
