I got about 7k out of my rear, and I'm at 9k on my front. The front probably won't make it through the riding season. It's already starting to get squirrely

Mileage depends on tire design. Sport tires are softer to give better grip, which equals a shorter life. Touring tires are made a harder compounds and they last longer.
I have a wife and 7 yr old that I want to see grow up, so I buy sport tires and then go touring on them.

Never worry about rear tire wear, living in SoCal I pick up a good size screw or nail about every 2-4k miles. My front tire has 7200 on it right now and is in bad need of replacing. 80% of what I do is canyon carving, my sides are terrible but the middle tread is still good.
