Default Front Wheel Repair

Hello everyone, been awhile since I was here, but I ran into a new issue. I had my front tire on my 2006 883 just go down on me @ 65 mph. Broke the tire down, no problem with the tire or the tube. Found alot of places that were rusted...bad, went to sanding some of the major rust off and discovered a hole in my wheel from corrosion. I put Jb Weld over the hole, figured it would hold as well as the rust was holding it. So...is this a common thing, is it safe? Where is the best place to buy a good used wheel (21" spoke")? All advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Razor

I don't understand. If there was no problem with the tube, the only way it can loose air, is through the valve stem/core.

Wanabe - No fun at all. I noticed a small vibration, then it got worse, and within a mile, It was down, I somehow held on and limped it over to the shoulder....as carefully as I could.

cHarley - I know, that's what we can't figure out either, but the valve stem was rusted badly, but we couldn't hear or see (after putting soapy water) any air leakage. My main concern is JB welding over the rust spots. I bought a brand new tube to go back in it, since the old one was the original from the day I bought it in 2006.

I've seen this problem a few times. If you live near the ocean or where salt is used on winter roads it can happen. If you have a hole from the rust, DON'T use the wheel. There could be flaws that you can't see and the wheel could be structurally unsafe. In a panic stop, the weight transferred to the front is over 1000lbs.

Can't you take the wheel to an engineering shop a and have it professionally welded up?
This post makes me want to take the tyres off and check my rims.
P.S. places i have found rust, the frame front weld where the crash bars mount. The grear shift shaft under the rubber gromet that goes through the casing ,inside the headlight, and the cover trim on the struts.

I live in the Piney woods of East Texas, nearest salt water is 1.5 hours away. Bike started rusting bad (head bolts, spark plugs, headlight) within a week of when I bought it. I called the Harley shop in Beaumont Tx, where I purchased her. (Which is alot closer to salt water than I am) They asked if I lived near the ocean too. I told them no....but your shop is close, was told there was nothing they could do for me and hung up. I put everything back together yesterday evening, got up this morning, tire and tube were holding air, so I rode it into work...30 miles, no incidents. Guess it will hold till I can find me a new wheel.

Did you buy this bike new or used? Is it garaged or left outside in the weather?

Best thing to do is pitch that 21" wheel in the trash. Get a 19" alloy wheel and put a real tire on that bike.

I'm surprised that cHarley didn't mention that.
