Default Carb Issue

Been lurkin for a while and trying to read what I can as I have a new to me 04 1200R. There is one issue that has me stumped. The bike would hesitate off the line like it was starved for fuel but then cruise fine. I pulled the carb to clean everything out as the PO stated she sat for a while. After the clean out the bike will idle but as soon as I input any throttle the bike spits stutters and stalls. i have pulled plugs and cleaned them, pulled the carb 3x to make sure everything is clean and the idle mixture is set to 2.25 turns out. What am I missing?
TIA
Scott

Id start looking at the jetting. I have a S&S super E on mine and it idled fine but if I cracked the throttle it would sputter and spit gas out of the carb I had to go down about 3 sizes on my jets and now it runs like a raped ape.

But if you aren't running a fuel injected bike this probably does not apply to you.

So you are welcome or im sorry haha

stock carb, stock 42/180 jets, stock pipes. It looks like its running too rich, tried turning down the mixture but it doesnt seem to be changing anything. any other way to turn down the fuel delivery that im missing or is this carb screwed?

well jets arent too expensive I would try to go down a size and see if that helps at all if not I am pretty stumped it may be worth talkin to someone at your local bike shop and see what they think

rwhite1 is on track. The slow jet (42) is in the circuit up till about 3/4 throttle. If the bike is stock without stage 1 then I would go down a jet size on the slow jet. I think the next lower slow jet is a 40. Jets are only about $5 so it is not expensive. You will have to remove the carb and take off the float bowl to get to the jets. Another alternative is to buy a dynojet kit for you bike which has the jets you need along with some mods to help carb response. The dynojet kit is about $100, but it will normally make the carb respond much better. Look at harley-performance.com, lot's of good cv carb info there.

From what I have read, everyone who has put on a dyno jet has regretted it.
As for the carb jets, you dont have to take it off.
I used a dremel to make a hole in the bung plug and a drywall screw to pull it. For future mixture adjustments.
4 screws to drop the bowl and then its easy access to the jets.
Over on XLForum there is a ton of picts and writeups about carb tuning.
And also if you have tuned it and still have issues, then replace you crank sensor. On the 04's they had a bad batch. It causes all kind of issues.

Go to CV Performance.com Everything you need to know is there. I make my carb work like it's supposed to.

I'd try pulling off the AC and twisting the throttle. Make sure the accelerator pump is indeed squiting fuel in when you give it a twist. This could very easily cause a stumble off idle.

The crank sensor is also a good place to look. It's a pretty common problem.
