Some of the EFI sportster owners, myself included, have talked about their bike getting the hiccups once in a while, especially during warm-up - in case you're wondering here's Harley's official explanation of this (Got your boots on?):
"All Harley Davidson motorcycles are made just a little bit different. They cannot all be expected to exhibit the same behavior. A break in the idle of a Sportster during warm-up is caused by the ECU switching from a warm-up mode to a normal operating temerature mode. This happens at about 180F and is normal even though it is not experienced by all EFI Sportster owners."
So there you go, that's basically it. This information comes from the District Mangager for Harley dealerships in southern Minnesota. His name is Pat. Pat says that he got HIS information from the "Lead Sportster Tech" who works for Harley, and THAT guy has supposedly been working for the company for over 30 years, 5 or 6 of which were spent with Buell.
So the next time your bike stalls out or a mirror falls off, don't worry: There's nothing really wrong with it, it's just special!
I brought it up the the service manager at St Paul HD and he said he had never heard of this with any sportster....I just smiled and thought UH HUH
Hahaha! Hilarious! I acutally talked to Phil in the service dept. in St. Paul about this a couple days ago and he said the same thing. When I told Pat that his mechanics had never heard of this but thought they could fix it if given the chance, he said they had "ill information" and wanted to know their names...all five of them! Hahaha!
Now the bike's finally home and by tomorrow I'm gonna be looong over due for a ride I think!
Mine got fixed compliments of the MOCO and I got to keep the SERT that they used to adjust the warmup software. Check out the sticky I've got posted in the "2007 and up EFI" forum "Engine Stumble On Cold Start" on the XLF. Huge, long, drawn out, unbelievble what they did kind of story. But it has not had one hiccup in two years of riding, gotta love it. Crazy how all the dealers don't know crap about it and damn near every EFI 1200 does it.
