My wife has a 06 1200L, and it has the dull aluminum case, otherwords not painted black, or any other color. I have seen some have written in and talked about painting their engines even some have used BBQ grill paint. How well has the paint held up??? Does it flake or peel back off, would it be better to have it poweder coated. How difficult is it to just polish the aluminum???
my covers looked like hell. I've been using an electric drill with a buffing pad, Meguiars aluminum polish and then mothers on it. then wiping it clean, it is turning out alright.
Thanks for the replies. Johnjohnson, I thank you for the face book page, your bike looks very nice. I may have miss spoke however, the part that Im wanting to shine up or paint is the engine jugs (Cylinders and heads and the part behind the primary cover). The outer covers, I have replaced with chrome ones.
titus, thanks! I've figured out pretty much everything else but when it comes to the jugs I'm screwed! The paint is chipping off in big chunks and I haven't figured out what to do to fix it, I was going to paint the engine but seeing how the bike is in the house and next to the water heater I don't think that will go over so well besides that the ventilation thing. I've kicked around powdercoating but don't want to tear the engine apart, so I have no clue at this time. If I come up with anything brilliant for the jugs, etc I'll gladly share it with you
I painted mine about 7 feet away from the hot water heater. There is not enough overspray to do anything. There is no flaking or anything so far. looks good after a year.

Powdercoating is a great way to go, if you decide t get brave and tackle the covers. Pretty straight forward, so you should be fine. Plus, my PC guy has 10% black, which is pretty flat. I was thinking of doing this, myself.
Be sure to post pics, I always admire a brillant pair of jugs.

really? I know when I did the heat sheilds by the 3rd coat or so I was seeing Elvis from me breathing fumes, I think he did the clear coats for me lol.. I'm thinking that this isn't a good in the house project.
what paint did you use midnight? I'm wanting to do it, just don't know when...
Tennessee, if I go the PC route it'll be next winter's project, I'm not set up to do the engine teardown in the back room right now.

Be careful around that water heater! My mother ended up with 3rd degree burns from an aresol can that punctured next to the w/h. Be safe and turn it of for the small amount of time that you will be spraying.

I polished mine and then used zoop seal after it was nice and shiny. The zoop seal has lasted 3 years without any problems and saves rebuffing every week
