Ok just got a 2000 883. I just coverted from sportbikes. My problem is riding around town it runs fine but when I get on the freeway the speedo quits working and it sputters until it kicks back in then when the speedo quits working it sputters. What do I do. Please help sorry if this is the wrong area this is my first post and I'm doing it from my phone. Hiding from my boss lol.

Check all 4 ends of your battery cables.

Do you have a diagnostic trouble code coming up on the bottom of your speedo

I have a 99 xlh that does the same speedo thing nowandagain (and no it isn't the battery connection). I will be running at 60 or so and it reads like 30. I just reach down and shut it of and turn it back on again. Speedo recycles and its fine as for the spitting mine does it occasionally with the crap ethanol we have to put up w/ Higher octane helps but it runs great on regular unleaded w/o the alcohol. Just sayin

I going with the elcetrical aspect too, but I'm going to suggest it's the little 90* connections onto the coil, since everyone else picked the battery connections. The connector will need removed, given a good squeeze by hand or pliers and remounted.

I had the same sypmtoms you're describing and it was the 90*'s
