The best way to tell is to do a voltage check when it is not working to see where you loose the voltage. Or get the connectors apart and do a continuity check on the switch. Intermittent problems are a PITA.

After thinking about it for a minute, check all fuses and relays for corrosion. Clean them up and put dielectric grease on all connections. Check Battery cables too. (Both ends) you may have a bad relay also.

Check battery connections. My get loose once a year(no kidding) Lot of stiff heady wires connected to it and all the vibration shakes battery and tends to loosen connection. I tried to free wire and foam pad battery but it still worked loose. My interstate roads are like Baja around here

More than likely it is just to let you know that you have a DTC logged that is not a hard failure, but like you lost power to the fuel pump or something like that. Check out the sticky on Diagnostic troubleshooting codes and go into the speedo and find out just what they are pertaining to.

The symptom you described sounded to me like the starter relay may be starting to go south on you. The codes may have something to do with the reg and batt change also.
