Hey guys I've been rebuilding my 87 sportster 883 with a 1200 conversion and a cv carb. I finally got to the point where its time to start it up but it won't start it just cranks and fires like twice . If you give it any throttle while cranking it back fires through the cab. I adjusted the ignition timing all the way retarded and was able to get it running but barely by pumping the throttle a few times and giving it some throttle while cranking the starter. If I let off the throttle it dies . I followed all the instructions for timing the cams so I think that's ok. the carb float was stuck when I first started but it cleared up . Does anybody have any ideas?
Did you remove the cams? If you did, did you put the proper cams in the right place? Did you line up the correct timing marks? Make sure you have connected the plug wires correctly. There is a front cylinder wire and a rear wire. Remove the spark plugs, make sure they are not fouled and properly gaped (0.038-0.043 in.). Check for vacuum leaks. Make sure the vacuum line, from the carb to the fuel petcock is connected. Did you install new intake manifold gaskets? Make sure you torqued the intake manifold flange screws properly.

+1 All good things to look over.
Man at this day in age, All someone has to do when removing things IE: cams. Is to pull out the cell phone and take pics......
All the timing marks were lined up like it shows in the hd repair manual . I replaced all the intake gaskets. I didn't have a torque wrench when I installed the intake manifold I'll torque them and try again . I don't see a spot on the carb or fuel petcock for a vacuum hose. I'll look again thanks for the help I'm still screwing with it .

Did you / are you sure the front cylinder was at top dead center when you did it by the book. And not on the compression stroke?
Check for a hose anyways but don't fret if you don't have one. Mine doesn't have one.
The plug wires can go either way unless you have a single fire coil....both plugs fire at once.
Is the CV carby new to the bike? Have you put it on for the first time as part of this rebuild?
If you have then I would put your old carby back on and see if it runs, if it does then you probably have something wrong with the new CV carby and its installation.
