I haven't seen to many sportsters with a windshield and was wondering opinions on which are the best for function and looks. I have an 05 1200C. Thanks
I just put the 58063-04 Quick-Detach windshield on my 2005 XL1200R to help extend my riding season. It is quite helpful in keeping the blast of cold air off my chest area as I run down the slab and can be removed in less than 30 seconds with no mounting hardware left on the bike. It's pricey but I like it because I figure I'll get a lot of utility out of it over the winter when I might not have normally ridden because of the cold. My saddle bags are also mounted on Easy Brackets that allow me to remove them in 30 seconds with no ugly hardware left on the bike. I'm just trying to get the most use out of the bike while retaining the ease of returning it to the lean, mean looking machine that it is in a matter of seconds. I'm very happy with both set-ups.
H-D quick detach on my '03 but I leave it on all the time as it keeps the wind from trying to push me off. I just remove it when storing the bike for the winter and I don't find it looks all that awful either when it's on.
Mine 03 1200C has a HD compact detachable (docking hardware remains) Nice size, functional, quickly removable. I got so used to it that the bike looks like something is missing when it is off. Docking hardware not that noticable when windshield removed.
It has a nice low profile look and the black tinting matches the black on my bike. It is the smallest shield Memphis makes.
I got it for the cold weather and it definitely helps. it really keeps the wind off my chest, and makes it easier to hold onto the bars.
I am actually getting used to the look.
Come Spring, I may take it off and see if I still like the bike without it. I may leave it on. I do not know. it is kind of growing on me. A lot of my friends actually like the look. They think it has a "fairing" look to it and cleans up the bike's front end.
I'm another with the HD's quick detach. Really does help at speed and in the cold . Rode today with temps @ 54 and made for a nice ride. Bike looks naked without it now that it's been on a couple years.
I just bought a Quick Detach HD Windshield off Ebay last night for $227. I hope it gets here soon. I'm pretty sure I won't like the look, but if it helps with the wind it will be worth it.
My only opinion is do NOT get the quick detach super sport. It is flimsy, and seriously distorts the view for the top 3 inches or so. I ended up cutting about 4 inches off the top so I could easily see over it, and it is "ok" now.
I also have a regular mount windshield which i fondly refer to as the big ugly... and to be honest. It isn't that hard or time consuming to put it on or take it off... like 2min tops, warm up time. I don't think quick disconnecting windshields are really worth the money.
